The military is known to have violated the Hunan rights of Nigerians during the time they were at the helm of affairs in the Nigerian government. A notable Nigerian whose rights was violated by the military was Fela, the music icon who was tortured severally for opposing the military government. Notable people killed by the military include Nigeria first Prime Minister Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, the Sardauna of Sokoto Sir Ahmadu Bello, a Premier of the Western Region Samuel Ladoke Akintola and Ken Saro Wiwa, a human right activist. Several people were also tortured during the military regime in Nigeria.

Corruption

While it is assumed that the military government was less corrupt than that of the civilian government, this can be said to be false. The military was also equally fantastically corrupt like the civilian rule. The military government was the only set of people allowed to be corrupt and eliminated others who try to do that during their time. The military government stole a lot of Nigeria money and resources and even his them abroad for them and their family to spend after they finish their tenure or should they be deposed or exiled. A former Nigeria military head of state who was able to hide millions of dollars in foreign banks was General Sani Abacha. Up till this day, the Nigerian government is still recovering the money in those accounts despite the fact that he ruled the nation over 20 years ago.

Ruined Economy

The Nigerian military destroyed the economy of the nation during its military regime. They were so corrupt that they infected civil servants with this disease. They destroyed the Nigerian civil service, the backbone of the economy which was the best in Africa and drove millions of Nigerians to poverty.

Unstable Government

The military regime was very unstable. The military heads of government were not sure if they would survive the next day as they believed other military officers could be planning a Coup d’état. They silence any of their perceived threats in the military and could not trust one another to deliver good governance to Nigeria. The military had to spend a fortune to guard their life and government against other members of the military. Most military Coup in Nigeria did involve the loss of lives and properties.

No Freedom Of Speech And Press Freedom

If you were a journalist during the military regime and wrote something bad about them, know that you are a threat to their administration and a target for them. The military could not stand anyone who could not sing their praises and believed such a person was an opposition to their administration. People live in fear during the military regime and could not voice out their opinion. The military regime used a lot of propaganda to hold on to power. Anyone or media house who spoke against the military during their regime faced their wrought. They monitored and guard what people could say or hear via the media.

The Nigerian military regime did not also care about education. They allocated little to the education sector making tertiary institutions to be less productive.
