Introduction of Alaafin of Oyo
The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Atanda Adeyemi III, was born on September 15 1938. He is the son of the late Alaafin Oba Adeyemi II. He is the 43rd Alaafin of Oyo and remains one of the most influential monarchs in Nigeria for decades. He is the first Yoruba monarch to become the Chancellor of Uthman Dan Fodio University, Sokoto. His father Oba Adeyemi II, a former Alaafin of Oyo was deposed in 1954 for showing sympathy towards the National Council of Nigerian Citizens (NCNC).
Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Atanda Adeyemi III succeeded Alaafin Gbadegesin Ladigbolu II as the king of Oyo in the year 1970. He was an insurance clerk before he emerged as the new Alaafin. Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Atanda Adeyemi III is a practising Muslim but describes himself as being liberal and a free mixer who was raised in a strict Christian home and attended a Catholic school.

Alaafin of Oyo is also known and addressed by other names such as Kabiyesi which means “the King Who No One Can Question”, Iku Baba Yeye that means “The One Who Can Command Death” or “Pronounce Same Upon His Father or Mother” Or “He Who Is Parent To Death”, Alashe which means “One Who Wields Authority”, Ekeji Orisha which means “second-in-command to the gods”.

Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Atanda Adeyemi III is a holder of the Nigerian national honour of the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR). was also him who installed the late Bashorun Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola (MKO) as the Aare Ona Kakanfo (Field Marshal or Generalissimo) of Yorubaland in 1988. The Alaafin of Oyo also bestowed on the talented singer, Salawa Abeni whom he crowned the Queen of Waka Music in 1992.

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Atanda Adeyemi III was the chancellor of Uthman dan Fodiyo University, Sokoto from 1980 to 1992. In 1990, he was appointed Amir-ul-Hajj by the then former military president, Ibrahim Babangida. The Alaafin of Oyo and the Ooni of Ile Ife are believed to be the two most powerful Yoruba Kings.
