The First Church in Nigeria
Christianity came to Nigeria when the first Portuguese missionaries arrived in Nigeria in the sixteenth century. Although, people might argue that the early churches in Nigeria was founded by the Portuguese, the oldest and first church in Nigeria was established a long time after the Portuguese missionaries left Nigeria. In this article by Ekomiami, we will be discussing the first church in Nigeria, and how it came to be.
The first church in Nigeria is the Cathedral Church of St. Peter and it is located in Ake, Abeokuta. St. Peter is an Anglican Church founded by Reverend Andrew Desalu Wilhelm in 1898. In the early 1890’s, this church served as a meeting place for all other missionaries involved in bringing Christianity to Nigeria.

A lot of upgrades in the form of renovations have been carried out in the church, making it a bigger and more modern auditorium where worship sessions can take place. The original structure of the oldest church is still standing, and serves as a tourist sites, as well as an artifact. The church premises also contains a hall named after the founder of Iwe Irohin the first newspaper in Nigeria, Reverend Henry Townsend.
